Slain New Mexico Deputy's Son to Take Place in 'Battle of the Badges' Football Game

Local law enforcement practiced at Rio Rancho High School Saturday for a special charity game without a key player.

"It's a tragedy. He was not only a sergeant with Sandoval County, he was an offensive tackle for this team," said friend Ryan Tafoya.

Sgt. Joe Harris had been training for this game for some time, and his teammates said he wouldn't want it canceled because he's not around.

Harris' son, Joe Harris Jr., is making sure his father isn't forgotten.

He walked onto the field Sunday announcing he'll play in his dad's honor.

"I'm going to wear my dad's number and ask my dad to be with me and give me the will and strength to play as good as he would have played," said Harris Jr.

Harris Jr. is in the Navy and is currently on leave from his duties in Washington, D.C.

He said he has to suit up because his father would have done it for him.

"My dad was known for always saying, 'Do the right thing,' " Harris Jr. said.

Harris Jr. admitted playing on the field was emotional and it brings back a lot of memories from high school.

"Every game I played I could always look down on this end zone and he was sitting right there," Harris Jr. said.

He said being a part of the team is important for the community.

"I call my dad a legend. His legacy in this town will never be forgotten," Harris Jr. said.

He said he wants to make his father proud.

The charity football game is called Battle of the Badges and will be held on June 26 at the Santa Ana Star Center.

Money raised from the event will benefit the Carrie Tingley Hospital and for public servants who need financial assistance.
